The Chosen Review

Another day, another debut novel! Nothing says fantasy more like elves and magic, with a little bit of human prejudice sprinkled in.

This was a decent book 1, especially for a debut novel. Unsurprisingly there are a large cast of characters which unfortunately is not my favorite thing. It annoying being introduced to new people every three or four chapters and it was difficult keep all of the side plots together while also trying to stay focused on the main story at hand. The main plot was intriguing and I liked the progression. I’m hopeful to see things eventually work out in the coming books.

The writing, unfortunately, was not impressive to me. It felt elementary and very surface level. The pace felt slow but also simultaneously sped up, which is confusing even to me as I was reading it. The characters in general felt lackluster and I grew no attachment to them throughout the story. I think there is a ton of opportunity for development. I’m hoping that book 2 will give us more. There no spice here so just be warned if you like your fantasy spicy!
