This novel was the perfect blend of folklore, and the exploration of cultural clashes. The emotions and interactions of both women felt as vibrant as the ghosts that lingered, and the Muslim Quarter that Soraya speaks so lovingly about.
Both women are very clearly total opposites, but it was written so masterfully that I’d be hard pressed to call it anything but genuine. The plot kept me engaged the entire time and left me speechless. The inching towards madness was a slow and artful crawl that only caught up to readers when it was time, not a moment too soon or too late.
The imagery found in this novel continued to awe me till the very end. I felt like I was in the midst of it all, with Soraya both in and outside of the estate.
Though this is marked as a horror I find it much more in the vein of folklore and historical fiction, which was still a win in my book.
