The Locked Ward by Sarah Pekkanen

This was a solid read for me. Nothing stood out as incredible or downright awful, which is still a win in my book. I’m one of those people who read thrillers as a pallet cleanser (please tell me I’m not the only one….) and it did the job well enough!

There were some unexpected twists (at least to me) that kept the plot interesting and kept me invested the entire time. The pacing felt a little slow, but I really think that’s more of a personal preference than it being done on purpose. It does pick up around 60% of the way through and I didn’t notice a lag after that.

The characters were the weakest part of the story to me. They fell flat, and I couldn’t get myself to care much about them, unfortunately. I would have loved to see more of their complexity and relationships with secondary characters.

If you’ve been following me for a while you know my opinion on dual POV’s. This was a case where it worked out for the best, much to my surprise (though I really should be less surprised given how many wins I’ve seen with this type of POV).
