I don’t think I’ve felt dread like this while reading in quite a while. Which is absolutely 100% a complement in this case. There was truly no way I was not finishing the book the same day!
Believe it or not, this was actually my first read of a Marcs Kliewer book, and I am grateful that this was my first introduction to him. His ability to write characters with depth and emotional connection is outstanding. I truly think it was one of the main reasons why I felt so connected to this story and why it left such a lasting impact on me.
The horror found here is more quiet horror (at least for me) Sure there’s gore and paranormal aspects but the majority of the plot I felt really used tension and darkness to conjure up reader’s fears instead of being outright about it.
There are so many unanswered questions for readers, and it take a very special author to not piss me off when its intentional. (thankfully I was more than okay with this set up, even after my anxiety left my chest).
I guarantee that this will not be my last read of Kliewer!
